As the G7 met in Washington, some questioned whether they had the tools to tame the markets. Finance leaders from the world's rich nations pledged a coordinated response to the credit-crisis, but stopped short of backing a British plan to guarantee lending. Britain's Chancellor of the Exchequer, Alistair Darling, said governments needed to "move on from simply agreeing on a general approach;".
